Big XII to retain name

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 24th, 2011 under Baseball

While we've all had a lot of fun with potential names for our new conference (The Longhorn 10 Conference, The Charlie Foxtrot Conference, The Abortion Conference), the Big XII has decided to stand pat on a name change. Baffling choice by the league, imho. But there is precedent for it I suppose. Dan Beebe - "Most people believe that the Big 12 is the name on the banner under which we have competed, under which

2009 – Final Team Rankings vs. Rivals Stars

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 23rd, 2011 under Football

This is a continuation of the previous article about 2010 final team rankings vs. their Rivals stars rankings. As before, I went back and performed an analysis of total Rivals Star points in each recruiting class that could compose the 2009 team. For the freshman class of each team (signing Class of 2009), I considered the contribution of this class at 10% of the team effort. For the sophomores (Class of 2008), 15%. For the juniors,

2010 – Team Final Rankings vs. Rivals Stars

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 17th, 2011 under Football

We spend a lot of time arguing how much talent matters in football versus coaching and development. I decided to try and play with some numbers to see how various football programs performed with the talent on hand for the 2010 football season. Of course, talent level can be a slippery fish to grasp. In order to assess talent level, I went back and performed an analysis of total Rivals Star points in each recruiting class

Was Mike McKinney forced out for not supporting TPPF?

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 12th, 2011 under Uncategorized

The big news yesterday was the announcement that A&M Chancellor Mike McKinney would leave his post effective 1 July 2011. McKinney Announces Retirement After serving as your Chancellor since November 2006, the time has come for me to step aside. My plan is to continue as Chancellor through the end of the Legislative Session and retire from my position effective July 1, 2011. Many may recall McKinney as the man who drove out Elsa Murano as A&M

Bruce Pearl is the right hire for A&M

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 11th, 2011 under Basketball

So, the early leader for the A&M job was Buzz Williams, but word on the street is A&M wasn't willing to put forth the cash. It isn't that we don't have money - there are baskets full of cash in Bill Byrne’s office left from migrant bat guano merchants. But once we go larger than $2 MM, we have to consider paying Mike Sherman more to avoid the embarrassment of him not being the highest

Mark Turgeon gone to Maryland

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 10th, 2011 under Basketball

Yesterday was a sad day for Aggie Basketball as head coach Mark Turgeon decided to modify his address from College Station to College Park and become the next head coach of the fearsome Terrapins. Snap, snap, snap. Frankly, I think we've all seen this coming for a while. His complaints about attendance were always a veiled accusation that "this isn't a basketball school." No, frankly, we aren't. We love basketball, especially the big games. But for

Nebraska expelled from Association of American Universities

Posted by Ag_in_TX on May 9th, 2011 under Football

Not too many college sports fans worry about esoteric academic topics like whether their school is in the Association of American Universities - that is, unless said fan actually attended the school for which they root. And so last week, a handful of Husker fans were disappointed when the University of Nebraska at Lincoln was expelled from the AAU. And there wasn't much of a noticeable blip in the blogosphere. We here at Spence Park Soapbox

Tressel “volunteers” for a longer suspension

Posted by Ag_in_TX on March 25th, 2011 under Football

What a hoot. The NCAA has upheld the original decision to suspend five Ohio State football players — four of them senior offensive starters expected to help win a Big Ten and BCS championship — for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling jerseys, rings and other tokens of Buckeye pride to a local tattoo parlor. But lo and behold - Jim Tressel has "volunteered" to have his suspension extended from two games

Von Miller is beasting the NFL Combine

Posted by Ag_in_TX on February 28th, 2011 under Football

On Monday afternoon, Von Miller hung a 4.46 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine. Four Point Four Six. Damn. That is an outrageous time after Miller gained nearly 10 pounds between January's Senior Bowl and the Combine. Miller, who weighed in 246 pounds and 6'-3" earlier in the week also recorded an impressive 37-inch vertical leap and a 10'-6" broad jump. Is Von Miller the next DeMarcus Ware? Is he now almost a certain Top 5

One school Trey Williams will NOT be signing with in 2012…

... is UT-Austin. Boo-hoo. Word on the street is he was hardballed and played off against Jonathan Gray on his visit to Austin. The impression was given by coaches that they would rather have Gray in an effort to get his commitment. Gray was not impressed by that treatment, but his dad assured him it was the normal way a big school like Texas handles recruiting. Gray let it all roll of his back and is assessing
