Street agent in the middle of the football scandal at Southlake Carroll?

Posted by Ag_in_TX on August 26th, 2010 under Football

Last year, we at Spence Park Soapbox detailed the recruiting saga at Katy Morton Ranch High School. In short, street agents, namely Lionel Cryer, had teamed up with the high school coaching staff. His outfit, Champion Sports Performance, funneled potential D1 players to Morton Ranch and helped arrange their residency. In return, KMR staff helped fix grades and get the kids eligible to play D1 ball. KMR also funneled money to CSP. The whole sordid tale was detailed here.

Now we have the drama of Daxx Garman, who is an Arizona QB commit who transferred from Oklahoma to Southlake Carroll for his senior year. He was ineligible to play high school ball in Oklahoma this season as punishment for violating residency requirements in his junior year.

This week, Brett Shipp (after being tipped off by pissed SLC parents) of WFAA in Dallas did an expose on the kid showing that his family still seems to very much live in Oklahoma and questioned whether he was eligible. There is a District Executive Committee meeting scheduled Friday morning to determine his eligibility to play for Carroll.

That report is here.

So, how did Garman get into trouble in Oklahoma and how did he end up at Southlake Carroll? This, to me, is the more interesting story that is not being discussed by the mainstream media. But your crack reporters here at Spence Park Soapbox have dug a little deeper and uncovered some stuff.

Gentlemen, meet one Joe Dickinson:

Photobucket
Street Agent

Joe Dickinson works for a recruiting service called DeBartolo Sports University (DSU). He is their QB Coaching guru. This organization is run by Eddie Debartolo, the one and only. DSU is a for profit recruiting service that runs camps and gets prospects to pay them a ton of money to market the kids to colleges and showcase them. Parents of QBs who are D1 recruits in the DFW area have told me that they get letters from this service at least every week trying to get their sons to sign up with them, touting all the QBs they have sent to colleges and the pros.

Coach Dickinson lives in Choctaw, OK – which is exactly where young Daxx Garman grew up. Dickinson, in fact, has worked with Garman for quite some time. Coach Dickinson’s resume is right here.

There should be one blurb in that resume that will cause the learned reader to raise his eyebrow:

Coach Dickinson served as the Offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator at several Division 1 football programs including: Tulsa (’86-’89), Marshall (’90), Northern Illinois (’91-’95), Oklahoma (’83-85,‘96-’98), Tulane (’99-’00), and Central Oklahoma (’03-’06).

Why golly gee! Who was the head coach at OU during this time? Well, this would be one John Blake! He hasn’t been involved with any recruiting shenanigans, has he?

In short, you can see the trajectory of Coach Dickinson’s career after being involved with all the sordidness at OU – one year at Tulane (was not asked back), out of football, then four years at D-II UCO – then free lance. He is now a full time hustler of quarterbacks – getting parents to pay him to coach them up and hustle them to colleges.

His latest prize recruit to add to his resume was Daxx Garman. When Garman was a freshman, this reporter has learned that Dickinson shopped him around to several high schools to see where he could get the earliest playing time. His home school, Choctaw, was not going to play him his sophomore year. He ended up at Carl Albert as a sophomore. His family had applied for a hardship waiver with the OSSSA for him to go to Carl Albert and it had been granted. Unfortunatley for him, he found himself the back-up at Carl Albert and his recruitment was going nowhere.

Then, he moved to smaller Jones High School for his junior year so that he would be guarenteed to be the starter – with Coach Dickinson’s help. But his family screwed up by not applying for another waiver – they are well off and just bought a small house there, which they thought was enough. He threw for a ton of yards and got a lot of attention. But the OSSSA caught wind and ruled him ineligible after the season was over. They also suspended him from playing in Oklahoma his senior year.

Meanwhile, Coach Dickinson was furiously showcasing his talent with the highlight film he had accumulated in Garman’s junior year. He was taking him to all the DSU football camps to show him off as well. Arizona decided the kid had talent and offered, which Garman accepted.

Now, Coach Dickinson has to find someplace for his star recruit to play as Arizona was upset that their recruit might not play his senior year. It turns out that Coach Dickinson already had connections with Southlake Carroll and was working with a young quarterback at Southlake Carroll, Grady Sullivan. This guy is a 7TH GRADER in the Carroll system thta Dickinson already has his claws into!

Carroll had an unsuccessful year in 2009 and head coach Hal Wasson may be on the hot seat if he doesn’t return the Dragons to their normal lofty status in Texas high school football. When presented with the opportunity to bring in a four star recruit like Garman, this reporter has learned Wasson jumped at the chance. The agent just wanted a place for Garman to play – nothing else. All the parents had to do was buy a house (they are well off, so no problem) and Coach Wasson was more than happy to take him.

And now Brett Shipp has called the whole thing into question.

In the end, the victim here is going to be the young athlete, the parents and the high school. The slimy street agents will just slither off and continue to do their thing. Disgusting.

    Solid, informative piece. Well done.

Any chance the pissed off SLC parents were connected to the QB pushed out of the way for Garman?

Great work. It is kind of you to not note that Dickinson’s first stint at OU coincides with Mack’s year as OC (1984).

How good of a prospect is he? I’m a little surprised that a program like SLC would be taking in vagabond athletes, but if they don’t have a Daniels or Dodge in the pipeline…

  3. The cupboard is sparse this season at QB. Daxx was the answer to Coach Wasson’s prayers.

  4. [...] since Brett Shipp’s report, another website has ponied up what it says is another part of the story. If it’s true, well, wow. If [...]

  5. Sorry, can’t include Daxx’ parents as victims. Buying a house in a town so your son can play as a soph? Then buying another house in another town so he can play as a junior? Then buying ANOTHER house in ANOTHER town in TEXAS so he can play as a senior?

They sound pretty slimy too, and certainly no victim.

  6. CORRECTION: I can find no record of the parents owning a home in Tarrant County, nor can I find any records of them having bought a house in Jones. Perhas they rented.

  7. Great info.

I saw the interview with the Southlake AD and he came off as an utter buffoon.

  8. Could you please delete your reference to my 13 year old son Grady Sullivan from your article. He is a kid and is not involved in this matter in any way. I found out about this through 2 phone calls I received today. Thank You for your consideration.

  9. I coach high school football and played high school football in the DFW metro, and it is truly sad that parents put so much hope and expectation on their kids’ football careers. With the kind of cash required to hire these paycheck coaches, you are getting the chance at a free college tuition (at best, assuming a laundry list of high risk things don’t happen along the way). I also played DivIA football, on a full scholarship, that I earned without a paycheck coach teaching me technique…and can tell you, first hand, that a super star high school player equates to nothing at the DivIA level, regardless of what these paycheck coaches “sell” you parents.

Grady’s Mom/Dad…get over the reference. The link is legit and your son’s picture is an advertisement on a public access website domain. It is pathetic that anyone would be investing in a paycheck coach for a 7th grader…sick.

  10. Todd Dodge X coach at Southlake now to be X coach at UNT is Good friends with Coach Dickerson and has had Coach D at his camps in Southlake and also at UNT. He knew what baggage the Coach had and put him in touch with a coach at Southlake that started the whole Daxx Texas transfer.
With Southlake returning only TWO starters 1 on offense and 1 on defense they needed a Blue Chip QB and Todd delivered.Todd did this so he could get his old job back after he gets fired this year at UNT.
Todd has had a history of dealing with Slime coaches like Ron Mendoza and the others he fired at UNT who he brought with him from his old place of employment.Prior to Southlake TD was 41-43 in his High school coaching record. What is his record at UNT 3-27
Todd do us all a favor and go back to U T and be a GA.

  12. Is it a coincidence that the D2 school (UCO) received NCAA sanctions for football violations during his time there??

  13. intheknow,

Good catch. No coincidence at all.

I knew about the UCO case but as I remembered it, the head coach took the fall for the whole thing. I forgot about the details of the matter. I went back and looked and was surprised by what I found.

Joe Dickinson was the recruiting coordinator at UCO from 03-06. According to the NCAA Infractions Committee, here is what happened under his watch.

The violations involved six two-year prospective student-athletes recruited to the university by the football coaching staff from spring 2003 to spring 2005. These prospective student-athletes transferred from the two-year college where the former head coach previously was employed prior to coming to Central Oklahoma. These young men were part of a large group of 40 two-year college prospective student-athletes recruited by the university during the former head coach’s tenure.

Some of the young men arrived in the area without visible means of support and before they were qualified for admission and athletics competition or aid. Once they were in the vicinity of the campus, but before they were enrolled full-time at the university, the young men were provided impermissible benefits including medical treatments, the use of institutional facilities, as well as free housing, meals and transportation. The benefits were provided by members of the athletics staff, including coaches and enrolled student-athletes. The university paid the costs of surgery for one prospective student-athlete prior to his enrollment in the total amount of $4,772, and on one occasion an assistant coach supplied one of the young men with a $200 cash payment.

As Recruiting Coordinator, it would have been impossible for Coach Dickinson to not be involved in this.

I would like to know who to speak to about this website. I am one of the former coaches at Morton Ranch High School, and I am sick and tired of you posting slander about me on your website. You can email me at jorsagh@gmail.com or contact me directly at 281-795-6068. Quit being a coward and hiding behind a name. If you want information come to the source.

GIVE ME A BrEaK! That brat, the slimy parents, the pompous high school and the greedy agents are all complicit in this- none of them are victims!! Potentially AZ is a victim because their product may come with a defect and no warranty. The only person I truly feel sorry for is you, for having no clue.

    Other than that, interesting article.

  17. Wow, the father of the 7th grader has to step in & the coach from Morten Ranch requests a response?

This is goofy from head to toe. About par for the course though, in this country & specifically in those areas sports/football is king.

Really surprised it took place tho.. SLC staff really think that would fly? C’mon. Wasson (if truely involved, which he would have to be) just created his own career path cieling. No one will touch that guy now.

Coach Orsagh, this is a public forum so you do have the opportunity to combat these allegations printed here and in many newspapers.
    What is slanderous?
(Cryer) His outfit, Champion Sports Performance, funneled potential D1 players to Morton Ranch and helped arrange their residency
    or
In return, KMR staff helped fix grades and get the kids eligible to play D1 ball. KMR also funneled money to CSP

I assume you’ve had your day in court so be the courageous one and tell us what happened. Clue us in to the errors of our ways.
but…BUT…don’t be surprised when the majority of people are just a tad uneasy with the behavior exhibited by your coaching staff, Lionel Cryer and JP.

  19. Jeremy Orsagh said:

    August 27th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Im not sure who JP is, and this is a public forum, so why dont you say who you are? And I never had a day in court, I had a day in front of the UIL who could not prove a majority of the charges. So get your facts straight. And what D1 player besides Sam Carter came into Morton Ranch? Ask any college that recruited Carter, he was rumored to transfer to MR since his sophomore year.

  20. I have been reading the various responses to this story all over the internet and it makes me sick. This kid is going through hell right now and all you people can do is kick him while he is down. HE IS A KID! A kid that just wants to play football. Why can he not play football? You guys say because he broke the rules and should pay the consequences. For a moment, lets pretend all of you are perfect and assume you have always made the right decisions. What did Daxx want to do? Play football. What is he not allowed to do? Play football. Why is he not allowed to play football? Because he wanted to play football. How do these rule protect the kid, which should be the main reason for the RULES. Right? The rules are to protect the students. Or as you people seem to think, the Rules are to bully some kid so he can’t play football. You people seem to consider this kid’s desire to play football, the same as a crime. He wasn’t robbing someone, stealing something, or hurting anyone. He just wanted to play football.
I find it amusing that some of the people on the panel that denied his eligibility, have a personal vested interest on opposing teams he would have played against. Guess he is a good enough ball player to scare a whole region of Texas, including DFW and the local news channels.

By the way. Ag_in Texas, you sure know have to attach a 16 year old kid. To bad you are not man enough to identify yourself. I used my real name.

  21. The rules are meant to protect the kids. Specifically here, the kids who were hurt by these breaking of the rules were – the QB at Carl Albert who lost his starting position – the QB at Jones – all the Jones kids who suffered the forfeits from last year – the kids at SLC who have dedicated years to their program only to have this person sweep in and take away their senior year. There are hundreds of kids whose high school football careers have been damaged in some way by this family’s actions.

It is these victims I have sympathy for. The kids who are playing by the rules, give years and years of effort to their program, only to find themselves on special teams their senior year because some free agent being hustled by a street agent illegally rides into town.

If you think about those kids for a minute, you may begin to understand why I do this.

  22. TaylorTRoom said:

    August 28th, 2010 at 8:21 am

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t Daxx be playing football right now if he had just stayed in the school district his folks lived in per the rules?

  23. uncle teardrop said:

    August 28th, 2010 at 8:51 am

Coach Orsagh, what facts do I need to get straight?
I’m too lazy and apathetic to look it up but wasn’t one ot the coach’s wifes having a
relationship with a star football player? That’s some serious motivation right there.

  24. That depends on the wife. And how’s Mississippi, Coach?

  25. I understand their are rules in place to protect the kids, but is that what they were used for in this instance? There are dozens of schools in Texas with the same recruiting problems. Are you attacking them as well? When will that report be out?

The whole system is broken. If a coach of a high school program doesn’t have a successful program they are fired. They are pushed to succeed. Then their are rules against obtaining better players to improve their program. You could have done a report on how much pressure a school or district puts on a coach to have a successful program. You could have done a report on how the committee approved his eligibility twice before. You could have done a report on the SLC athletic director. His eligibility was denied. Period. Did you really need to bash a 16 year old kid in an article that would show up any time anyone googled his name.

His reputation is already damaged. What you have successfully done is make sure that anytime someone looks up Daxx or Grady, that your negative and bashing article will permanently stain their reputation. You sir are a coward. You could have attacked your school system, your local values concerning football, or any other problems. Unfortunately, you chose to attack a 16 and a 13 year old kid.

    You are some Robin Hood.

  26. nghia, you sound like a person who has been allowed to do whatever you want at anytime with no consequences…people have to learn to live by rules…everyone, not just the ones that do it because they know it is the right thing to do…rules apply to everyone.

  27. Rules have reasons. People should live by them. The people that enforce these rules should enforce them consistently and not when it suits their personal best interests. What makes this case so special. Things like this happen every season. Ag_in_texas chose this case. Why? Personal vested interest? Maybe?

How do you teach children to do the right thing just because it is the right thing if they don’t see equal and consistent consequences for all guilty parties. Is this kid in trouble because he broke the rules or because he pissed off the wrong people or parents. If it is because he broke the rule, then the rules should be enforced on the hundreds of other Texas teenagers that constantly break the same rules.

I wonder how many others have been recruited for this School?

I think the three schools that voted with Southlake at the DEC have something to hide.

That is the only possible way they could have thought this was OK. ( no pun intended )

Thank You for the report now it is crystal clear.

Can you dig up some more transfers at some other schools?

  30. Just an FYI, the QB at Carl Albert didn’t lose his starting spot to Garman. That’s what started the whole revolving door of moves and trouble for the Garmans.
Funny thing is that he’d have just stayed there and been the backup QB (behind a kid that signed a MLB baseball contract less than a month ago) and started at another position last year on a state championship team he WOULD be the starting QB now with a pretty good shot at another state title of his own.
Just would have taken a little patience but obviously that’s something not in the Garman’s vocabulary.

I would bet he still would have earned a D1 scholarship without all the turmoil.

  31. Nghia, what made this so special is the Garman’s didn’t cover their tracks well enough, people found the facts and reported it.
This needs to happen more ofter when other people break the rules. Problem is, too many people don’t want to get involved and do the right thing.
Just because someone is getting away with it doesn’t make it right for someone else to break the rules too. That’s no way to live life…then again, many people are doing this in all aspects of life right now. Why do you think our country is in such a mess? These kinds of ethics are what parents have been teaching their kids and then they have that same attitude in business, politics, and so on. We’ve seen this problem over the last 30 years in America. It all starts with small things like this.

  32. Ex-coach Orsagh,
When the UIL suspends you for 3 years from coaching, I am afraid that there must be some sort of proven allegations. If they were not true, why did you take the short suspension and not fight it? My daughter, then the sports editor of another high school’s newspaper did a lot of due diligence to track exactly what happened in writing an article about what’s wrong with high school sports. Of course, when she contacted you, you declined to give her a statement. Just get over it. you did wrong, got caught and now have to deal with the suspension. Using your name after having been named in the UIL paper does not constitute slander. Rather, it does constitute fact.

I can understand Daxx wanting to play football. But where do you cross the line where your desire to play football infringes on the hard work of others who actually live in the community. Daxx is just passing thru Southlake (no pun intended). Southlake football is being used to further his own selfish goals. His presence and the actions of those involved are tearing the community apart, and the youth who grew up in Southlake and dreamed of being Dragon varsity football players are suffering. I am proud of our community and I want some slime remover to put the sheen back on it.

ps. Grady’s a great kid, a good football player and a long-time Southlake resident. I hope to see him in a Dragon uniform and NOT sitting on a bench because someone decided to rent a local house to play football.

  42. I have left up all the bashing of me and my research because I wanted those people to have to continue to see what they typed when the truth came out.

    Boom goes the dynomite:

    http://www.wfaa.com/news/investigates/New-revelations-in-Southlake-Carroll-QB-eligibility-controversy-102580394.html

Did Southlake Carroll’s quarterback move to Texas just to play football — despite state rules prohibiting it?

News 8 has obtained new information that again calls into question Garman’s eligibility.

Two weeks ago, the University Interscholastic League’s 7-5A District Executive Committee voted 4-3 to strip Garman of his athletic eligibility.

The Committee determined that Garman violated the state rule prohibiting students from transferring to another school purely for athletic purposes.

The rules stipulate “any relocation of residence should be a complete and permanent move for the family.”

A News 8 Investigation exposed how the star quarterback had been declared ineligible to play football in his home state of Oklahoma in late January.

Four weeks later, the Garmans moved into a rental home in Southlake. Yet News 8 discovered Garman’s father still worked and was living in Oklahoma, and the family’s home there was not listed for sale — until after News 8 began asking questions in August.

Yet Southlake Carroll officials insisted they had done everything possible to check out Garman’s eligibility.

District Athletic Director Kevin Ozee said one of the determining factors in verifying the athlete’s eligibility was “verifying the home agreement to secure that home.”

Ozze was making reference to the residential lease agreement between the Garmans and their landlord. It’s a one-year lease commencing on February 22 of this year.

But if Southlake fully vetted the lease, did they fail to see the clause on page 11?

It reads: “In the event the Tenant’s son, Daxx Garman, is not accepted in the Carroll ISD Football program, Tenant will have the option to cancel this Lease…”

State UIL rules stipulate that “a student who changes schools for athletic purposes is not eligible to compete…”

One source tells News 8 the clause in the lease agreement contributed heavily to the vote to strip Garman of his eligibility two weeks ago.

But remember, the vote was split — three committee members still voted in favor of Garman.

The three principals from all three Keller high schools ultimately felt the Garmans’ move to Southlake was for legitimate, not athletic purposes.

Our requests to interview all three principals on camera were denied.

But one principal, David Hinson of Keller Central High School told us, “I don’t know if I saw the lease clause” in question.

When we offered to show it him he said, “I don’t want to see it.”

We put the same question to Southlake Carroll officials. Did they see the clause on page 11?

“If you are asking whether or not Carroll administrators read… absolutely every detail in every document… in our possession, the answer to that question is, no,” said Julie Thannum, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing for Southlake Carroll ISD.

The Garman family has appealed their son’s case to the UIL’s State Executive Committee in Austin. The case will be heard next Tuesday.

The lease agreement clause will be presented as evidence.

  43. Well, it gets more interesting. The attorney representing the family at the UIL Hearing on Tuesday was Karl Hanner.
    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/highschools/leaderboard/v3/southlake/carroll/stories/091510dnspogarmanlede.2882869.html

He apparently specializes in, among other things, representing COACHES before the UIL.

“Tiger has worked with coaches from across the State of Texas, having successfully represented members in proceedings before the University Interscholastic League, State Board for Educator Certification, and the Commissioner of Education.

Tiger frequently appears at coaching clinics to speak on issues of concern for junior high and high school coaches in Texas.

    http://www.brimarnett.com/Hanner.asp

  44. The alleged “family health” reason for moving to Southlake is getting a little flimsy also. While of course wanting only the best for the health and well-being for all concerned. the young mans parents picked an interesting place to move if the truly did so because of “… health problems faced by his aunt…. “.

The young man’s Aunt Kelli, (sister of his mom, Shelli) lives in Frisco. The neighborhood where she lives is a good 35 mile/55 minute drive from Southlake. It doesn’t add up.

With all that being said, this is a truly sad and regretful situation for all concerned.
