So we sign 23 and ‘lose’ 2, one because he believes that he is going to be a wide receiver at LSU and the other, for reasons ‘unknown’.
The cited reason was because we don’t have a linebackers coach. Do you buy that? I don’t – in just the same way as I don’t buy that he would have signed with the Ags if Joe Kines had still been in charge. Obviously the manner of the defection was in poor form, but the milk has been spilt. I guess those scholarships could have gone to people who actually wanted to go to College Station – but thinking of others isn’t exactly high on the to do list of the average 18 year old.
Now onto the serious business – finalising the coaching staff.
In comes DeRuyter, not quite a fiery young up and comer, but one with a good record of doing more with less.
Also coming in is Terrell Williams a line coach and a reputation for recruiting excellence, based primarily on his ability to sign (unranked) recruits from Florida once the Gators, Canes and Seminoles have had their pick. Here’s hoping that he helps reinforce the Texas borders.
We know that DeRuyter was a DB coach in his previous incarnations. So now we have three DB coaches – Chuck McMillan, Van Malone and Tim DeRuyter – we all know that doesn’t work, so what / who gives. Not Chuck (hired by Sherman) or Tim, so goodbye to Van.
If Van had left before signing day we could have lost half a dozen recruits – or at least had to put some serious work in to make them stay.
So who comes in to fill the hole? Well I would love it to be Dat. Is it going to be, who knows? I have a sneaking suspicion that it won’t be and that a safe(r) option will come in. I bet he could recruit Dallas as well as anyone else though.
Alternatively we could see Kirk Doll slide over and a new tight ends / special teams coach come in.
Whoever or however the linebackers coach gets filled, he will start without Corey Nelson – rather that than lose Honeycutt, Hurd, Klinke, Matthews and Williams.

Looks like Malone and Doll are gone, and Cromwell is going to the NFL.

So, Malone saved the recruiting class but is now the odd man out. The Sherminator sure can pick ‘em, huh?

Glad Randy Rriggs reads spencepark – guess we are making headway.
In case there is any doubt, can I say that I think losing Kirk Doll is a mistake. He has been doing it for too long for too many good teams for him to be bad at his job.
As for Malone – i think now is the right time. He was a holdover from the Fran era, I guess to keep recruits on board in Sherman’s first class. You have to admit, the performance (statistical output) of the DB’s during his tenure has not been great. think of him as a little coach february
Chuck McMillan was a Sherman hire and has a decent body of recruiting work to fall back on too.
Nguyen will have to go down as an ace recruiter – the stars just align for some people like that.
